Bronx River Parkway Skate and Bike Ride
Sunday, June 27th, 2010
This is a beautiful skate through southern Westchester on the traffic-free Bronx River Parkway. It's a curvy, rolling 7-mile stretch of a 4-lane parkway that is reserved for cycling and skating for 4 hours every Sunday in the spring and fall. The road is smooth, the bike traffic is light, and the hills are ‘just right’.
We’ll meet at the White Plains train station (Metro North Harlem Line) at 11:15AM and to get rolling at 11:30 sharp, since we have to be off the parkway by 2. From the train station/County Center, we'll skate/bike the Parkway to Bronxville, Scarsdale Road, regroup and roll back to White Plains. Then we'll go 3.5 miles on the bike path to the Kensico Dam we can spend as much time as we want at Plaza Park without having to worry about the Parkway closing. We can play Frisbee, relax, grab something at the snack bar, etc. Those who want can catch the train at the Valhalla train station right there. Others can then skate back to the County center, passing North White Plains train station for those that want an intermediate exit for a train or go to City Limits Diner for lunch, across the street from the County Center where we start, and near the White Plains Train Station.
Total distance will be about 15 miles on BRP, 22 miles if you go to the dam.
If you’re traveling by train, take the 10:25 from Grand Central (get your ticket and meet up with fellow skaters at the information booth at 10:15). It's a 49-minute ride, and round trip off-peak fare is $14.50. The train also stops at 125 St. (Park Avenue) at 10:35. We’ll be done in time to catch the 2:11 or 3:05 (return train leaves every 05 and 11 minutes after the hou) back to NYC.
We’ll have a car in White Plains where you can stash your shoes and bags.
If you want to come by bicycle, you have to have a bike permit for the train. You can get the lifetime $5 permit the same day or before by previously downloading and filling out permit application at MTA bike webpage www.mta.info. Permit application and $5 fee must be given to ticket or conductor staff.
If you're driving, check maps.google.com for directions to 198 Central Ave, White Plains, NY 10606-1102 (Westchester County Center). Note that they usually close off the Bronx River Parkway exit off the Cross County Parkway, so you may have to take some local roads to White Plains.
You are skating/biking at your own risk. Helmet and Wrist Guards are required. Bring sun protection, water, and lunch money.
